TEN-TEC ORION TEST
by DJ0IP & DL8OH
Soon after the original TEN-TEC ORION announced, I got a chance to test one at one of the Bavarian Contest Club's contest sites. It was only a small site with no Yagi for 80m, but it had good Yagi antennas on 40m and above, all mounted at least 75 ft. high. We had verticals for 160/80m as well as large 80m long horizontal loop.
The test was conducted on October 17/18, 2003.
The only other transceivers available for comparison were an Elecraft K2 and ICOM IC-746. It was NOT an "PRO", although when I originally wrote the test, I called it a PRO. The 746 was well equipped with narrow filters in both IF's.
The test was conducted during the "Worked All Germany" (WAG) contest weekend. We did not actively participate in the contest because neither operator was familiar with the ORION at the time. The contest did provide the necessary QRM for comparing the radios.
